SERMI is coming, be prepared!

Big changes are on the horizon for anyone involved in the maintenance and repair of vehicles, particularly concerning anti-theft systems. The implementation of new European legislation mandates a SERMI certification from April 1, 2024, for those working on the anti-theft elements of cars, campers, or trucks. This certification is crucial for ensuring smooth operations and compliance with the law.

What is the SERMI certification?

SERMI stands for Security Module Immobilizer, and it’s set to revolutionize how technicians interact with vehicle security systems. From April 1, 2024, technicians must hold a SERMI certificate to program all car, camper, and truck components related to theft prevention. This includes keys, ignition systems, door locks, and even modules like transmission or shift modules, which could be part of the immobilizer system.

Why is this important to you?

Obtaining SERMI certification is not just a recommendation; it’s a necessity. Failure to acquire this certification could lead to significant disruptions in your workflow. After April 1, 2024, some services may become inaccessible, and assistance from suppliers may be limited if you lack SERMI certification. This also goes for working with ATR Remote.

How can you obtain a SERMI certification?

To ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted service, it’s imperative to take proactive steps towards certification. In the Netherlands, certification can be obtained from reputable authorities such as KIWA, DEKRA, BOVAG, and the SERMI-Register. For other European countries, visit http://www.vehiclesermi.eu for detailed information on certification procedures and authorized bodies.

It’s essential to note that SERMI certification is personal and tied to both the individual technician and the company they represent. Without company registration, employees cannot apply for certification. This underscores the importance of ensuring that both individual technicians and the companies they work for are SERMI registered.

Once obtained, SERMI certification is valid for five years, providing peace of mind and stability in your operations. However, it’s crucial to stay informed about any updates or changes in regulations to maintain compliance.

To facilitate the certification process, we’ve compiled a list of authorized authorities where SERMI certification can be obtained, depending on your country of operation:
